Zimbabwe Allows Independent Dailies for 1st Time in 7 years

The Zimbabwe Media Commission granted a publishing licenses to the Daily News, the long-banned independent newspaper, and a handful of other publications. Commission Chairman Godfrey Majonga announced on 27 May 2010 that the licenses would be issued immediately, marking the first time in nearly seven years that an independent daily will be allowed to print domestically.

Commission Chairman Godfrey Majonga announced on 27 May 2010 that the licenses would be issued immediately, marking the first time in nearly seven years that an independent daily will be allowed to print domestically.

The Daily News, the nation’s most popular paper before it was banned by the government in September 2003, will resume publishing under its one-time editor, Geoffrey Nyarota.

Zimbabwe Media Commission Accepting Media Applications

The Zimbabwe Media Commission began receiving applications for registration of mass media service providers and accreditation of journalists, according to the Zimbabwe Mail. Media, Information and Publicity Minister Webster Shamu made the announcement in a notice. Application for mass media houses is US$500 while the registration fee for successful applicants is US$1,500. The deadline is 10 June 2010.

Harare, - The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) said on Friday it was ready to receive applications from journalists and media organisations starting on Tuesday, May 4.

"The Zimbabwe Media Commission wishes to announce to all concerned stakeholders that the 2010 fees for registration of mass media service providers and accreditation of journalists have been gazetted and the Commission is now ready to receive applications," said a statement signed by the chair, Godfrey Majonga.

Zimbabwe Country Union

The Guild of Journalists, forerunner of the Union of Zimbabwe Journalists and the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists was formed in the early 1950s by journalists who had been active in what had been the Rhodesia branch of the South African Society of Journalists (SASJ). The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) was formally launched on October 19, 1985 at the Ambassador Hotel, Harare.

ZUJ is the only media and journalist workers union in Zimbabwe and boasts membership of over 1500.
