The Guild of Journalists, forerunner of the Union of Zimbabwe Journalists and the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists was formed in the early 1950s by journalists who had been active in what had been the Rhodesia branch of the South African Society of Journalists (SASJ). The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) was formally launched on October 19, 1985 at the Ambassador Hotel, Harare.

ZUJ is the only media and journalist workers union in Zimbabwe and boasts membership of over 1500.
